The process for getting an internship is dependent upon your degree major. If you want to get course credit, you will need to work with your degree program director to arrange for credit. Regardless whether you get credit or not, internships are a great way to learn new skills that can help you find employement after you graduate.
Student Internships
Business Student Internships
Students in the Business program are required to participate in an internship as part of thier curriculum. Generally, they complete that during their last year of coursework, but should begin the process during their junior year.
Internship Resources
The Career Services Office at IU Columbus can answer questions and provide more infomration about the variety of career-related resources available to students. Below are some resources specific to internships.
Handshake
Handshake is the official platform used employers to post internship opportunities, as well as to recruit students for internships. We recommend that students create a profile and keep that profile up to date. Once you have your profile set up, you can search for internship opportunities, as well as part- and full-time jobs.
Work and Learn Indiana
Work and Learn Indiana is a program of the Institute for Workforce Excellence, a 501(c)3 subsidiary of the Indiana Chamber of Commerce. The program links employers, learners, high schools, colleges and universities. It is a dynamic, searchable database, matching and reporting system that also provides resources and guidance on work-based learning opportunities.
Community Networking
Another great resource is your family and community. Reach out to family members about whether their employer has an internship program, or talk with businesses in your community. Many businesses (both large and small) have established internship programs, and it's best to reach out and start building a relationship early in your college career.
