Minor in Literature

To earn a minor and literature requires a total of 15 credit hours (five courses), including:

• One course from the following: L202, L203, L204, or L205

• One survey of British literature (L301 or L302) and one survey of American literature (L351, L352, or L354)

• Two elective courses in literature, at least one of which must be at the 300 or 400 level

*In order for a course to count toward the completion of the literature minor, you must receive a grade of "C" or better.

To pursue a minor in literature at IU Columbus, contact Maggie Evans for an application form. The form should be completed and submitted when you are enrolled in your final literature class.

Career Options

One career that students of literature often pursue is teaching in the humanities at a university, college, or high school. If this describes you, you’ll pursue graduate study to earn a master’s or doctoral degree.

If graduate study isn’t what you had in mind, careers in these fields are possibilities:

  • Computer and information technology, including social media management, Web development, and graphic design
  • Business administration in public and private sectors
  • Publishing, editing, writing, English translation, etc.
  • The arts, including music, dance, performing arts companies, or museums and cultural organizations, including nonprofits
  • Fundraising, politics, or broadcasting
  • Teaching English as a second language overseas

How to Add a Literature Minor

The first step toward adding a Literature minor is to speak with your advisor. They can provide the best guidance regarding how it will fit with your current academic program. Your advisor will then submit an application to the registrar's office on your behalf.
